Algebraic Expressions

Day 2: Evaluate with Substitution

Today's Objectives

Warm-Up: Order of Operations

Simplify each expression:

  1. 5 + 2 × 10
  2. (8 - 3)²
  3. 16 ÷ 4 + 2

The 2-Step Process

Step 1: Substitute (Plug)

Replace the variable with its given value. Use parentheses!

Step 2: Simplify (Chug)

Use the Order of Operations (PEMDAS) to find the final value.

Example 1: I Do

Evaluate 3x + 5 when x = 4

1. Substitute: 3(4) + 5

2. Multiply: 12 + 5

3. Add: 17

Example 2: We Do

Evaluate k² + 4m when k = 5 and m = -2

1. Substitute: (5)² + 4(-2)

2. Exponent: 25 + 4(-2)

3. Multiply: 25 - 8

4. Subtract: 17

Independent Practice

Choose your level and evaluate each expression.

RED (Developing)

  1. Evaluate x + 10 when x = 7.
  2. Evaluate 4y when y = 6.
  3. Evaluate z - 3 when z = 15.

YELLOW (Applying)

  1. Evaluate 2a + 3b when a = 5 and b = 2.
  2. Evaluate c² - 1 when c = 8.
  3. Evaluate (d + 4) / 2 when d = 10.

GREEN (Securing)

  1. Evaluate |m - n| when m = 5 and n = 12.
  2. Evaluate √p + q² when p = 36 and q = -3.
  3. The cost for friends is 12f + 5f. Find the total cost for 4 friends.

Exit Ticket

Evaluate each expression for the given values:

  1. 5x - 2 when x = 6.
  2. a² + 9 when a = 4.
