  • For any immediate danger, call 911 first.

Fire / Evacuation

Signal: Continuous alarm or announcement.

  1. Immediately cease all activities and get students' attention.
  2. Lead students to the primary evacuation route (see map).
  3. Take the class roster and emergency folder/kit.
  4. Close the classroom door; **DO NOT LOCK IT**.
  5. Proceed calmly and quietly to the designated assembly area: Old Melrose Fire House Parking Lot.
  6. Take attendance immediately and report any missing students to administration.

Lockdown / Active Threat

Signal: "Lockdown, Lockdown, Lockdown" announcement.

  1. Clear the hallway and bring any nearby students into your room.
  2. Lock the classroom door and cover any windows on the door.
  3. Turn off all lights.
  4. Move all students to the safest corner of the room, away from doors and windows, and out of sight.
  5. Instruct everyone to remain completely **SILENT**. Silence all electronic devices.
  6. Do not open the door for anyone. Wait for the "All Clear" from an administrator in person with a key.

Severe Weather / Shelter-in-Place

Signal: "Shelter-in-Place" announcement (e.g., for tornado warning).

  1. Move students into the designated shelter area: English Class Room 2.
  2. Instruct students to sit on the floor, facing the wall, in a "tuck and cover" position (head down, hands over head).
  3. Take the class roster to account for all students.
  4. Remain in the shelter area until the "All Clear" is given by administration.

Medical Emergency

For any student or staff member in medical distress.

  1. Assess the situation for safety. Do not move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger.
  2. Use the classroom call button or send a reliable student with a pass to the Nurse or Main Office.
  3. Provide clear information: your location, the nature of the emergency, and the state of the individual.
  4. Keep other students calm and provide privacy for the affected individual.
  5. Provide first aid only if you are trained and certified.
