Day 5: Multiplication & Division Basics

Today's Objectives

Warm-Up: A Visual Puzzle

If you have 4 bags and each bag has 3 apples, how many apples do you have in total?

๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ

How could you solve this using addition?

What is Multiplication?

Multiplication is a shortcut for repeated addition.

Instead of adding the same number over and over, we can multiply!

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

is the same as...

4 x 3 = 12

The Language of Multiplication

4 x 3 = 12

Factor

What is Division?

Division means sharing fairly or splitting into equal groups.

If we have 12 apples and want to make 4 equal groups, how many apples are in each group?

12 รท 4 = 3

The Language of Division

12 รท 4 = 3

Dividend

(The total)

Divisor

(# of groups)

Quotient

(The answer)

They Are Opposites!

Multiplication and Division are inverse operations.

This is why we have "Fact Families" that use the same three numbers.

4 x 3 = 12
12 รท 4 = 3
12 รท 3 = 4

Let's Practice Together

Problem: 35 รท 5 = ?

1. Think: "What number times 5 equals 35?"

? x 5 = 35

2. Answer:

We know that 7 x 5 = 35, so the answer is 7.

Exit Ticket

Solve the following problems:

8 x 6 = ?

54 รท 9 = ?
