Day 5: Multiplication & Division Basics

Today's Objectives

Warm-Up: A Visual Puzzle

If you have 4 bags and each bag has 3 apples, how many apples do you have in total?

๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ

How could you solve this using addition?

What is Multiplication?

Multiplication is a shortcut for repeated addition.

Instead of adding the same number over and over, we can multiply!

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

is the same as...

4 x 3 = 12

"Four groups of three equals twelve."

The Language of Multiplication

Let's learn the names for each part of the problem.

4 x 3 = 12

Factor

Factor

Product

The numbers you multiply are factors. The answer is the product.

What is Division?

Division is the opposite of multiplication. It means sharing fairly or splitting into equal groups.

If we have 12 apples and want to make 4 equal groups, how many apples are in each group?

12 รท 4 = 3

"Twelve divided into four groups is three."

The Language of Division

Division has its own special vocabulary, too!

12 รท 4 = 3

Dividend

(The total)

Divisor

(# of groups)

Quotient

(The answer)

They Are Opposites!

Multiplication and Division are inverse operations. They undo each other.

This is why we have "Fact Families" that use the same three numbers.

4 x 3 = 12
12 รท 4 = 3
12 รท 3 = 4

Let's Practice Together

Problem: 35 รท 5 = ?

1. Understand the Question

This asks, "If I split 35 into 5 equal groups, how many are in each group?"

2. Think Multiplication!

Since they are opposites, we can ask: "What number times 5 equals 35?"

? x 5 = 35

3. Find the Answer

We know from our multiplication facts that 7 x 5 = 35.

So, the answer is 7.

Exit Ticket

On a piece of paper, solve the following problems:

8 x 6 = ?

54 รท 9 = ?

1 / 10
