Day 5: The Big Connection

Three Ways to Say the Same Thing

\(\frac{1}{2}\)

Fraction

0.5

Decimal

50%

Percent

All three of these represent the exact same value!

Today's Objectives

Our Conversion Map

We will learn how to travel between all three forms.

Percent
Fraction
Decimal

Percent \(\leftrightarrow\) Decimal

This is the easiest conversion! It's all about moving the decimal point two places.

Decimal \(\rightarrow\) Percent

Move Right \(\rightarrow\)

0.25 \(\rightarrow\) 25%

Percent \(\rightarrow\) Decimal

Move Left \(\leftarrow\)

45% \(\rightarrow\) 0.45

Fraction \(\rightarrow\) Decimal

A fraction is just a division problem in disguise!

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

\(\frac{3}{4} = 3 \div 4 = 0.75\)

Remember: "Top dog in the house!" The top number goes inside the division box.

Decimal \(\rightarrow\) Fraction

Use the "Say It, Write It, Simplify It" method.

0.8

1. Say It: "Eight tenths"

2. Write It: \(\frac{8}{10}\)

3. Simplify It: \(\frac{8 \div 2}{10 \div 2} = \frac{4}{5}\)

Percent \(\rightarrow\) Fraction

Remember, percent means "out of 100".

Just put the number over 100 and simplify!

40% = \(\frac{40}{100} = \frac{4}{10} = \frac{2}{5}\)

I Do: Putting it all Together

Let's convert \(\frac{1}{5}\) to a decimal and a percent.

To a Decimal:

Divide: \(1 \div 5 = 0.2\)

To a Percent:

Move decimal 2 places right:

0.2 \(\rightarrow\) 0.20 \(\rightarrow\) 20%

\(\frac{1}{5} = 0.2 = 20\%\)
